What is the football team from the University of Michigan known for?

The University of Michigan team is famous for these reasons:

  • having the second-highest winning percentage in college football history and the most victories overall.
  • the first Rose Bowl victory.
  • Having the most winning seasons of any college team.
  • most widely watched team.
  • most spectators ever at an NCAA football game.

Is the football squad from the University of Michigan overrated?

It has been awful what Michigan has done to their past opponents.

Michigan is the nation's third-best team in terms of points scored per game (48.7), points allowed per game (10.0), and yards allowed per game (10.0). (207). In 8 games, Michigan has outscored opponents by more points than they have allowed.

Strong teams defeat weak ones. To put up figures like that, though, demands a squad that is genuinely dominating.

Without a doubt, Michigan is not the best team in the nation. When facing opponents who were more difficult than Michigan's opponents, Alabama has been tremendously impressive. I believe that it is obvious who should be ranked number one at the moment.

The teams below Michigan, however, show that Clemson should have fallen to NC State despite beating two rated teams (Auburn and Louisville in a tight game). Washington has defeated one team that is rated and has similarly trounced its other opponents to Michigan. Nebraska has won a few games, but none of them have been convincing victories.

Every other team has either a defeat (which in college football may count for more than it should, but that's how it is), not played a challenging schedule, or demolished its opponents.

Therefore, I can understand why Washington or Clemson may be ranked higher than Michigan. The three teams are grouped together at the top, as expected (Michigan squeaked out Clemson by a single point in the coach's poll). Michigan's next light schedule affects them in this regard, and I wouldn't be shocked if they entered their final week unbeaten but still ranked third or fourth, especially if Clemson or Washington (or both) had played really well.

But if Michigan defeats OSU, especially if the victory is convincing everything changes. There is no question in my opinion that Michigan will be ranked #2 (unless Alabama loses) going into the conference championship if they can travel to Columbus and defeat the Buckeyes. If Michigan goes on to win the conference title, I predict they will remain in second place going into the playoffs. If Michigan keeps winning, they could have to face Clemson in the first round and Alabama in the second.

Given how poorly the Michigan football team is performing right now, why is it a legendary college team?

The same question might be put to Notre Dame. Fielding Yost led Michigan's football team in 1900, beginning a lengthy history for the program. With 995 victories and a winning percentage of 0.730 over the years, Michigan has the best record in college football. This includes a winning record versus the following powerhouses:

Ohio State: 58–50–6 (although this rivalry has been dominated by OSU in recent years)
  • Notre Dame: 24–17–1
  • Penn State: 14–8
  • Nebraska: 5–4
  • Florida: 4–1
  • Alabama: 2–2

In the Big 10, only Michigan has won more conference championships (42) and produced three Heisman Trophy winners. The Michigan uniform and battle anthems are undoubtedly the most recognizable, and Michigan Stadium is the biggest in the nation and always packed to the gills. Of course, the University of Michigan's reputation among colleges and universities, as well as its sizable and well-known alumni base, do not help either.
Unfortunately, none of it alters the fact that the show has been subpar for the previous ten years. The tradition, however, cannot be disputed.
